The exciting young Danish conductor, Christian Hørbov-Meier is rapidly catching the attention of musicians and audiences alike as a commanding podium presence and intellectually probing musician.
A recently appointed conductor of REMUS, Regional Youth Orchestra of Jutland. Appointed Conductor and Orchestra Activities Director of West Branch International Music Festival & Academy 2010 in the USA, and presently the Music Director and Conductor of FAUST, Funen Youth Symphony Orchestra, Christian traveled monthly from the United States to Denmark in order to fulfill commitments on both continents.
Trained as a classical violinist from the age of eight, Christian was accepted into the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Aarhus at the age of twenty, following two years of service as a sergeant in the Danish Military. He received his Master of Music degree in 2003.
His principal teachers included: Marta Libalova; Anker Buch; and Ove Elkjaer. In addition, Hørbov-Meier participated in masterclasses with Nikolaj Znaider, Lars Bjørnkjær, and Odin Rathnam.
During this time, Christian Hørbov-Meier was increasingly being drawn to the podium.
The young conductor’s first appointment came in 2001 when he was asked to lead the Hobro Chamber Orchestra. Next came a one-year appointment in 2005 as Music Director of Fredericia City Orchestra. Through the support of numerous awards and grants from Danish foundations, as well as a graduate assistantship and international scholarship from Shenandoah University, Christian worked closely with professor and conductor Jan Wagner, for four years. He received his Master’s Degree and Artists Diploma (Post Master) maintaining a cumulative G.P.A. of 4.0. During this period he was also a participant in the Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition 2006 and in the Pierre Monteux School conducting programs in 2007 and 2008.
Christian Hørbov-Meier’s experience is broad and covers repertoire from baroque to present time with several world premieres of new music composed by Composition Majors at SU.
Christian has during his studies been the Assistant Conductor and Orchestra Manager of Shenandoah University Symphony Orchestra and has also served as Assistant Conductor of the Shenandoah University Opera productions, conducting full performances of both Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and Britten’s A Midsummer Nights Dream.
