Born in Ponte de Lima, Portugal, in 1991, José António de Abreu discovered his love for the horn at the age of 11 and has since become the Principal Horn player of the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock in 2018.
He began his studies in Viana do Castelo with Bernardo Silva and Bruno Rafael and continued his education with Abel Pereira in Lissabon and later with Javier Bonet in Barcelona. He was greatly influenced well by continuous work with distinguished horn players such as Juan Manuel Gómez in Barcelona and Ignacio García in Berlin and had the chance to gather inspiration from attending several masterclasses held by Hermann Baumann and Radek Baborak.
During his studies he was awarded prizes in competitions such as the Concurso Internacional Oliveira de Azeméis (Portugal), “Concurso Internacional Torres Vedras” (Portugal), Concorso Internazionale per Corno “Federico II” in Sannicandro di Bari (Italy), David Rusell Competition (Spain), Prémio Jovens Músicos, RTP (Portugal).
Since his first performance with a professional orchestra at the age of 16, he was invited and engaged by numerous orchestras, mostly as Principal Horn, among them the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Cadaques Orchestra, Valles Symphony Orchestra, Ljubljana international Orchestra, Algarve Orchestra, Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Staatsorchester Kassel, Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie, Metropolitan Orchestra of Lissabon, Philharmonisches Orchestra Vorpommen, Lübecker Philharmoniker, Cappella Aquileia, music Aeterna.
In these occasions he has been working with famous conductors and soloists including Marcus Bosch,Martin Hannus, Anna Skryleva, Pablo Gonzalez, Juanjo Mena, Peter Ruzicka, Joana Carneiro Günter Neuhold, Michael Zilm, Ziva Ploj, Andrea Marcon, Enrico Onofri, Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Robert King, Michal Nesterowicz, Lutz Köhler, Andrea Sanguineti, Fabio Mechetti, Georg Fritzsch, Michael Boder, Lars Vogt, Gary Hoffman, Alice Sara Ott , Alban Gerhardt, Christian Tetzlaff, Teodor Currentzis.
During his concert tours as a soloist, for recitals, chamber music and with orchestras, he visited Portugal, Spain, Andorra, France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Serbia, Germany, England, Turkey, Poland, Malaysia, and Russia, performing in festivals such as the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt, Ljubljana Festival, Dias da Música in Lissabon CCB and Peralada Festival and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
After his debut as soloist in 2008 in the Teatro Diogo Bernardes de Ponte de Lima, José António de Abreu has been invited to play solo concerts with orchestras and ensembles in Portugal, Spain, Turkey and Germany, performing works such as: R.Schumann – Konzertstück für Vier Hörner (1.Horn), R.Strauss – Horn Concertos No.1 and 2, W.A.Mozart – Horn Concertos No. 1 and 4, E.Chabrier – Larghetto für Horn and Orchestra, C. Saint-Saëns – Concert Piece, F.Strauss – Horn Concerto and J. Haydn – Horn Concerto n.1.
José António is a very active chamber music musician. He is a founding member of the Abreu Brass Trio. Recently he performed with the pianist Dmitry Shishkin and Zielona Góra Philharmonic Soloists. Besides his musical activities, José António likes to read and to listen to jazz music, and go to the gym. He enjoys cooking and he is a red wine fancier.
