A recent graduate of Riccardo Muti’s Opera Academy, Wilbur Lin is a Taiwanese-American conductor and pianist currently based in California. His recent highlights include studying with Riccardo Muti and conducting Verdi’s Macbeth at Teatro Alighieri (Ravenna, Italy), a production of Zauberflöte with Winter Harbor Opera (Winter Harbor, ME), an appearance with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (Windsor, ON), and guest conducting El Salvador’s National Youth Orchestra. With his father active in amateur choral conducting, Wilbur began his musical education at the age of five. He founded his own orchestra, the Chamber Philharmonic Taipei, in 2008. Started as a student orchestra, the Chamber Philharmonic Taipei is now a professional chamber orchestra with active annual summer seasons funded by both the Arts Council of Taipei and the Taiwanese Ministry of Culture.
Briefly holding assistant conductor positions at Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Taiwan Symphony orchestras, he worked closely with conductors Andrew Manze and Fusau Kajima. Wilbur’s conducting engagements have taken him to prominent international stages including National Concert Hall of Taipei, Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall, and BBC’s Media City UK studios, among others.
Wilbur regularly works with Chamber Philharmonic Taipei and has also conducted the Manchester Camerata, MAV Symphony (Budapest), Taipei Philharmonic, Taiwan Symphony, Cadaques (Spain), Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Guiyang Symphony (China), Missouri Symphony, Northwest Florida Symphony, and Windsor Symphony (Canada) orchestras.
Apart from orchestras, Wilbur has also worked with notable choirs and bands, including the Taipei Philharmonic Chorus, Bury Choral Society (UK), and the United States Coast Guard Band. As a pianist, Wilbur coached and performed with IU Opera Theater, Reinventing Opera for Kids, Indianapolis Opera, and led a joint production between RNCM, Opera North (UK), and Music Theater Wales, in addition to his freelance work as a vocal/opera coach and collaborator.
Wilbur has studied with Arthur Fagen and David Effron at IU, Clark Rundell, and Mark Heron at RNCM, and Apo Hsu at National Taiwan Normal University. He has also received conducting coaching with, notably, Riccardo Muti, Sir Mark Elder, Vasily Petrenko, Juanjo Mena, Jac van Steen, Mark Stringer, Paul McCreesh, and Helmuth Rilling.
